If an invitation arrives with the prescribed "White Tie" dress code, it will be a promising, extraordinary occasion. Nowadays, the tailcoat is often replaced by the tux, so that "white tie" attire is often reserved for royal ceremonies or similar events.
Significant and unique
"White Tie" is the most solemn and elegant way to dress. Unless you happen to be a conductor or take part in ballroom dancing competitions, the chances of you wearing a tailcoat one day are rather slim.
Hosts of all prestigious, upscale events after 6 p.m. want to greet guests in a "white tie" dress code. At grand balls such as the Vienna Opera Ball, state banquets or Nobel Prize ceremonies, guests will be wearing tails.
The basic outfit
The following elements are required for a "white tie":
- a white, self-tied bow tie
- a white shirt with a stand-up collar
- a white vest
- a black tailcoat
- black trousers with two gallon stripes
- suspenders
Without exception, everyone involved in such events is dressed to the nines. A black bow tie distinguishes the waiters from the guests. The white bow tie is therefore essential and, as with the "Black Tie" dress code, must be tied skilfully. The collar of the shirt is not the only thing to consider. In addition to the small collar, the shirt has a reinforced breast section made of cotton piqué, a specially woven fabric. The shirt sleeves should be two finger widths longer than the tailcoat sleeves, but should not extend over the wrist.
Tailcoat and vest
The tailcoat is characterized by the two swallowtails at the back and ends at the front at the man's waist. The lapels as well as the fastening and sleeve buttons are decorated with satin fabric.
Instead of the cummerbund, which is only acceptable for musicians, the man always wears a white vest underneath. Thanks to its satin waist belt, which is tied at the back and can therefore be individually adjusted, it allows more freedom of movement than might be assumed at first glance. Like the tailcoat, the vest also has a lapel, vest pockets and elegant buttons.
Suspenders and opera pumps
The trousers are made of the same material as the tailcoat, straight, not too tight and without turn-ups or pleats, playing around the legs. The side seam has not one, but two galloon stripes. This dress code does not include a belt, simply because the trousers should fit well without help. Instead, suspenders are part of the "white tie" look.
The correct shoes for this dress code are a little too feminine for most men, as they have a higher heel than is comfortable. Opera pumps may sound more like a word a woman would use, but they are actually intended for men. Although they no longer appeal to a mass audience, there is no clear successor.
If you don't want to opt for opera pumps, you should always go for narrow, elegant patent leather shoes, such as Oxford lace-ups.
Accessories
As much skin as possible should be covered, which is why black socks in the form of knee-high socks are a must. White glacé gloves are the perfect accessory.
If headgear is required, this always means a black top hat. Like the coat or a potential silk scarf, this is only worn outside. A folding top hat (also known as a "chapeau claque") is a suitable variation that can be stored easily and space-savingly during the event.
A wristwatch does not go well with a conventional tailcoat, which is why a gold pocket watch is a recommended option. Gentlemen can wear some jewelry in the form of cufflinks and a pin or boutonnière (flower in the buttonhole) on the lapel.
If you want to complete the classy look, a tailcoat perfectly fulfills the "white tie" code. It has a chrome-plated knob and is coated with piano lacquer.

There is a free choice of color as long as it is not something garish, crazy patterned or white, as the latter is reserved for debutantes. The arms are usually covered by long gloves or arms and shoulders are covered by an evening cape or stole, except outside. At the same time, the dress must not be too tight or reveal too much.
